Being aware of changes in our society and culture that affect our youth, as well as the reality that many eligible candidates for Confirmation decide not to receive the Sacrament after they are into their high school years,
Bishop Kemme changed the age of Confirmation in our diocese from grade 10 to grades six and seven.
Specific to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic church, a three-year transitional plan for Confirmation Preparation Program will be implemented. This year, students in grades eight, nine, and 10, as well as those who are older and not yet confirmed, will be confirmed. All candidates must be Baptized and have received the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
Parishioners in grade 8 who attend our parish school will participate in Confirmation Preparation during their school day and will be confirmed on January 5, 2020.
Our youth who are in grade 8 who attend a public, private, or home school, and are eligible for Confirmation, will be prepared for the Sacrament on Wednesday evenings (during the time our Parish School of Religion meets) beginning in late August. Their Confirmation will also be on January 5. Catechesis on Wednesday evenings will continue until May. A meeting for these candidates and their parents will be held on Wednesday, August 28 at 6:00 p.m. in the School Cafeteria. Following candidate preparation meetings will be on Wednesdays from 6:00 – 7:15 p.m. in our parish school. Details about the program and the full schedule will be shared during the first parent/candidate meeting.
Parishioners eligible for Confirmation who are in grades nine and 10 will be prepared during Sunday evening small-group meetings, which will be held off-site beginning in late August and will be confirmed on December 15, 2019. A meeting for these candidates and their parents will be held on Sunday, August 18 at 7:15 p.m. in Allen Hall. Following small-group preparation meetings for candidates only will be on Sundays from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Details about the program and the full schedule will be shared during the first parent/candidate meeting. Information about small-group leaders and meeting places will be emailed to parents after the first meeting.
Parishioners in grade 8 who attend St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School will be prepared during the school day and need not register for Confirmation Preparation.
