Change to Ignite
This past spring we began a process of strategic planning for youth ministry in our parish. A committee was created, made up of parishioners and young people involved in our youth apostolates. Under the umbrella of our many apostolates for youth is the middle school youth group, Ignite. The goal of Ignite is to give our middle school parishioners a place to form community and encounter Jesus Christ with their peers in a fun and welcoming environment. Ignite is also meant to get youth connected with ministry in their younger years so they feel welcome and excited to attend our high school youth group, STAY, as they navigate new challenges and experiences in their high school years.
Traditionally, Ignite has been open to all middle school parishioners in grades 6-8. As I am sure you know well, youth grow and mature a lot in those three years. With the input of the committee, I have thoughtfully considered the varying needs of our youth in this age range and have decided that, for the time being, Ignite will be for students in grades 7 and 8 only. I believe is that this will enable our older students to go deeper in faith formation and forming community that will last beyond their middle school years. We will continue to evaluate the possibility of 6th graders joining Ignite.
There are many opportunities to grow and improve this ministry and I look forward to working with our Leader of Youth Ministries, Laura Gouvion, and the committee as we plan for its future.
Sincerely Yours in Christ,
Rev. Matthew C McGinness
