Beehive update for week of 9/5/10 - 9/12/10

The big news is there is not school on Monday, 9/6 due to Labor Day Holiday.  I hope you are having a relaxing weekend somewhere!  We will return to school on Tuesday, Sept. 7th, refreshed and ready to go. "Refreshed" is our secret code for the week.

As you may have seen in your student's Friday Folder, we are planning a 3rd grade field trip to Taynganika Wildlife Park.  We will receive a wonderful, personal "hands on" tour of the park that will include feeding some of the animals.  In addition, we will participate in a fun learning activity with a park ranger.  Please indicate on the permission slip if you would like attend the field trip as a parent volunteer.  Remember that you must be virtus trained.  I'm sorry but siblings will not be permitted since the activities planned can only handle a fixed number of children in the 3rd grade age level.  Sack lunches with non-soda beverages will be needed for both students and parent volunteers.  The trip will be on Wednesday, September 22. We will take a school bus and parents may follow along in their cars.

Friday, September 10 students will be encouraged to wear red/white/blue shirts and or socks with their school uniform to express their patriotism as we commemorate the 9/11 tradgedy.

Please remember to review your student's homework at home to make sure they understood the concept of the day and that it was complete.  We usually have time in school to get the majority of the work completed in class but a few problems often remain to be done under your supervision.  Also remember to check your child's grade on Power school periodically.

You may note that I have added some documents to the right of this newsletter.  Just click on the document to read it.

Math:  We are working on Chapter 2 - Even and Odd numbers, Place Value up to the 6th digit (hundred thousands), and number patterns.  Ask your child to sing one of our math songs to you!  They include:  "Count by Twos", "Even or Odd" and "The Place Value Song".  By Friday we will be working on the Ch. 2 study guide and will test on Tuesday, Sept 14th.

Math Magicians Club: Club meetings will begin on September 29th.  These fun activities will begin right after school in my room and students will be done by 3:50.  Look here in the following weeks to find out what our first activity will be!

Science: We begin our unit on Science Inquiry.  The students will be learning about and practicing with scientific tools such as beakers, droppers, goggles, thermometers and more.  I expect it to be a "bubble"-ly week!

Social Studies: Students should have brought home their Social Studies test on Ch. 1 - Communities in their Friday Folders.  The primary focus was on the three types of communities (urban, suburban, and rural) and well as learning map reading skills.  We will suspend social studies while we work on science the next few weeks in our "Social Science" class time.

Religion:  We will continue our study of the three sacraments of initiation:  Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation.  If you are in the building, come look at the student artwork on sacraments in our hallway bulliten board. We will work on the Ch 2 study guide in class on Tuesday.  The test will be on Thursday, September 9th.

We go to Adoration in the main church every Wednesday from 9:20 - 9:40.  You are welcome to join us if you like!

News from the Beehive 08/30/10

We will be very busy this week.  The students are learning the procedures and getting down to the buisiness of learning.  As I'm sure you have noticed from the agenda, there are two tests on Monday.  I usually do not have 2 tests in one day but I feel the students can handle it as the math test is review from last year's concepts.  We spent Friday's class playing review games.

Following is a summary of what we will be covering in this week's classes:

Math:  Monday is the test on addition and subtraction.  The rest of the week we will work on  Ch 2 - place value to 3 digits and patterns on the hundred chart.  The Math Magician's Club will start in late September or early October.  Check here for updates later in the month.

Religion:  We finished Chapter 1 on the Good News and the Church as one body.  A study guide and the Chapter Review went home with your child this weekend.  If the children spend some time this weekend reading over the half sheet study guide, they will do fine on the Monday test.  We will begin Chapter 2 this week and will continue with lessons on anti-bullying.

Social Science:  We have been studying communities such as urban, suburban and rural areas.  We have also been brushing up on our Map reading skills. The Chapter test over Communities will be on Thursday.  Next we will start a unit on Science Inquiry in which the students will do hands-on activities learning about the science tools we will be using this year.

Remember to write the secret web-site code in the Friday Folder to show that you read the Newsletter for the week.  Your child will receive 5 extra credit points for having the code written in the Friday Folder.  The code for this week is "beleive".

The homework board will be updated on Monday morning.
